Online Training Tutorial and Certification

Congratulations on beginning your training. This page provides video demonstrations and key instructions on how to use the materials in your Reading Engagement Kit. There’s a lot to learn, so please come back to training for a refresher on how to use any of the activities.

  • Find the Parent & Family Planning Guide in the kit. The first page outlines the 15 weeks with the corresponding sections for the Spoken Word Game, Written Word Game and Out-loud reading practice. You will find details about how to use the games and you will see your game word lists for each session.
  • Use the Planning Guide to make sure you have all the necessary parts for that day’s lesson. Be sure to keep the Word List hidden for your student.
  • Make sure you keep all of the items found in the kit, with the kit. Items like the Word List or the Game Blocks are very important, so don’t lose them!

The Spoken Word Game focuses on sounds NOT letters. The Spoken Word Game requires a Word List, Wooden Blocks, and the Spoken Word Game Board. Instructions for the game are included in the Planning Guide and in your Quick Start Game Instruction Sheet. Here is the video that will show you how this game is played.

Remember, each block represents the sound of the word. When making the word ‘Do’ from ‘So’, both blocks need to be replaced because the ‘O’ sound is also different in each word.

The Written Word Game helps students recognize sound letter patterns. For this activity, you’ll need the Word Pad and a pencil. Instructions for the game are included in the Planning Guide and in your Quick Start Game Instruction Sheet. All the letters for one sound are written in one box. The word is divided by sounds on the word list. Let’s watch a tutor and a student play this game in the video to the right.

The Readers include 4 reading exercises and a reading passage in each chapter. After chapter 1, the exercises begin with an activity that requires a definite answer (i.e., sentence or fragment, word finders, word scrambles). All of the correct answers are in the last pages of that reader. Further instructions can be found on page 1 of the Readers.

Assessing Progress

We want you to be able to see your student’s progress! Please use our free reading assessment before you begin and at the end of session 5, 10 and 15 to see how much progress they are making.  Here is the link to our 3-minute assessment.

Use our Free Reading Assessment to mark your child’s progress.

One of our online reading programs will be suggested according to your students results. The online activities are an excellent companion to this Tutorial Kit and can be purchased separately from our online store. Your student will login to our program from their web browser and complete online activities independently with minimal supervision from you.
