Level 1 is for first grade and is built on three curriculum focal points:

  Developing understandings of addition and subtraction and strategies for basic addition facts and related subtraction facts.
 

  Developing an understanding of whole number relationships including grouping in ones and tens.
 

  Geometry: composing and decomposing geometric shapes.

 

 

 

This level has a number of skills and strategies:
  Develop strategies for addition and subtraction.

  Use a variety of models for developing number sense for addition and subtraction.

  Relate place value to addition and subtraction.

  Solve two-digit addition and subtraction problems with strategies that students understand and can explain.
 

  Measure and count units by using groups of tens and ones, supporting understanding of number lines and number relationships.

  Identify, describe, and apply number patterns and properties in developing strategies for basic facts.
